How routes are planned
Predictability is the vulnerability. Route planning therefore covers more than geography:
- Collection times are varied within an agreed window rather than fixed to the minute.
- Routes are rotated so the same vehicle and the same staff are not seen at the same place on the same day.
- Vehicles do not display branding that identifies what they are carrying.
- Handovers happen out of public view, inside the premises rather than on the pavement.
- Staff do not follow a routine that can be observed — no stopping for fuel at the same station, no repeated banking at the same branch at the same hour.
Staff vetting and handling discipline
Cash handling staff are vetted to a higher standard than general guarding, with identity, background and reference checks before their first route. On the job, discipline is the control that matters most: two-person handling, sealed and numbered bags, documented transfer of custody at every handover, and no deviation from procedure without authorisation.
Where cash is counted on site, counting is done in a controlled area with no public access, and the reconciliation is recorded and signed. The record is what protects the staff as much as the client.
Risk, insurance and limits
Any cash movement carries a value limit, and the limit should be set deliberately rather than discovered after an incident. We agree the maximum value carried per collection, the frequency needed to stay within it, and the insurance arrangements covering the movement. Where a client’s takings exceed what a single collection can safely carry, the schedule is increased rather than the risk accepted.
Cash should also spend as little time on the premises as possible. A safe that holds three days of takings is a three-day exposure.
How cash services are priced
Pricing is based on the number of collection or delivery points, the frequency, the geographic spread of the route, the value being moved, and whether the service is a scheduled collection, an escort or on-site handling support. A single site collected daily and a route covering twelve sites weekly are different contracts.
